Erich Steiner (translation scholar)

Erich Steiner (born February 16, 1954 in Heidelberg ) is a German linguist and translation scholar . He is currently professor for English translation studies at the Philological Faculty II Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies at Saarland University.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1973, Steiner began studying orchestral music at the State University of Music of the Saarland in Saarbrücken . A year later he moved to Saarland University in Saarbrücken, where he passed the first state examination in German and English in 1980 for teaching at grammar schools. Three years later he did his doctorate there in English Philology (Linguistics) with the topic "The Development of British Contextualism". Then in 1984 Steiner passed the second state examination for teaching at grammar schools in German and English. He completed his habilitation in 1989 at the Philosophical Faculty of Saarland University with the topic "Towards a model of goal-directed action as a structuring principle for the Context of Situation in Systemic Linguistics", for which he received the Venia legendi for Modern English Linguistics in the same year was granted.

After completing his habilitation , he worked for a year as a department and project manager in the field of multilingual generation and analysis of natural language at the Institute for Integrated Publication and Information Systems (IPSI) of the Society for Mathematics and Data Processing (GMD) in Darmstadt . In the same year he was appointed professor for English language and translation studies and in 1991 professor for English translation studies at Saarland University. From 1993 to 1994 Steiner was elected Vice Dean of Faculty 8 "Modern Linguistics and Literature" and from 2002 to 2004 and from 2009 to 2012 Dean of the Philosophical Faculty II for Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies. Today he works as a professor for English translation studies.
