Erich Unterweger (born March 14, 1928 in Bad Kleinkirchheim , † December 12, 2007 in Bad Gams ) was an Austrian sculptor and visual artist .

Life

Erich Unterweger was born on March 14, 1928 as the eldest son of the blacksmith Johann Unterweger and his wife Julia, née Primeßnig, in Bad Kleinkirchheim in the Carinthian Nock region. After finishing elementary school in Bad Kleinkirchheim, Erich Unterweger attended the master school of German crafts in Klagenfurt from 1943 . In 1945, however, he had to end his training because the war ended and the school was closed. For the next two years he worked in his parents' company, where they no longer wanted to study.

In 1947, after successfully passing the entrance exam, Erich Unterweger was able to continue his art studies for sculpture at the State Master School for Applied Arts in Graz, later on at the Graz School of Applied Arts , where he graduated in 1949. His teachers included Alexander Silveri and Walter Ritter - Department of Sculpture, and Rudolf Szyszkowitz - Department of Painting and Graphics. Then he began to build up his existence as a freelance artist in Graz.

Erich Unterweger met his future wife Erika Welzenberg in the Catholic education center Maria Trost, where he found room and accommodation at the beginning. In 1950 he was able to realize his first commissioned work. The impressions from a five-week trip to the Middle East in 1955 changed and strengthened his artistic expression.

In 1958 Erich Unterweger and Erika Welzenberg married in front of the altar in the Franziskuskapelle of the Graz school sisters, which he completed that year. The sons Martin in 1959, Holger in 1960, Gottfried in 1961 and Thomas in 1967 were born.

Erich Unterweger was a member of the “Young Group”, the “Steiermärkischer Kunstverein Werkbund” and the “ Kunstverein Kärnten ”. Since the 1950s, works of various techniques have been created in Graz. In the period between 1960 and 1985, Erich Unterweger was awarded several prizes.

After buying an old farmhouse in 1989 and renovating it, Erich Unterweger and his wife Erika Welzenberg moved to Bad Gams in western Styria in 1992. Erich Unterweger died on December 12, 2007 at the age of 79 in Bad Gams.
