Erich Max Hugo Wagner (born December 6, 1876 in Berlin , † June 25, 1957 in Kuchen an der Fils ) was a German painter.

Career

From 1891 to 1895 Wagner completed his apprenticeship as a decorative painter at the Fachschule Berlin. This was followed by years of wandering as a handicraft painter's assistant to Dresden , Salzburg , Hamburg and Dessau until 1899 . That year he married Auguste (née Poltier) in Dessau.

In the following years until 1910 he worked independently for decorative painting. During this time he was also a student of Lovis Corinth in Berlin (nude studies). In 1912 he moved to Stuttgart , where he initially had a job at the Henninger company and from 1919 lived as a freelance artist with his own studio. At the same time, he continued his education with Christian Georg Speyer and painted landscapes, flower motifs and character heads. From 1920 he went on study trips to Switzerland (including high mountain motifs and Ticino images). The city of Stuttgart, the People's State of Württemberg and private collectors acquired pictures from him. At that time he received orders for the design of church interiors and also did artistic work in the Linden Museum in Stuttgart. He was a member of the Reich Association of German Artists, founded in 1927 .

Between 1929 and 1939 Wagner moved back to Berlin, where he worked for the UFA film company. He then returned to Stuttgart, where his studio was destroyed by bombs in 1943. In the same year he and his wife moved to Kuchen an der Fils.
