Erik Niedling (2018)

Erik Niedling (born October 18, 1973 in Erfurt ) is a German artist.

Life

Erik Niedling grew up in Erfurt. At the beginning of his artistic career, Niedling dealt with the “ construct of history ” in his work and the traces it leaves behind in “collective consciousness”. Examples of this are the large-format photographic works that can be found in the volume Photographs / Photographs (2006). Later works are also characterized by questions about collecting, archiving and organizing, whereby the preservation and (fictional) disappearance of one's own identity come to the fore.

Since the mid-2000s, Niedling established himself as a concept artist . He has worked with the writer Ingo Niermann since 2006 . In 2010, Niedling produced the documentary The Future of Art together with Niermann . In it, Niermann developed the idea of a pyramid mountain as a work of art, which is also the individual burial site of a collector. In the art project My Last Year , Niedling lived for a year from March 1, 2011 to February 29, 2012 as if it were his last. This was followed by exhibitions and publications that deal with his artistic and biographical legacy as well as the further realization of the Pyramidenberg . In this context, on May 8, 2017, Niedling carried out a ritual seizure (“seizure”) of the mountain Kleiner Gleichberg in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia, where the “Burial of the White Man” festival has been held on the mountain every 8 May since takes place. A critical reflection of his activities took place through diary publications, interviews and in the novel Burial of the White Man published in 2019 .
