Erika Gfrerer celebrated her greatest successes in the early 1980s. In 1980 she won the European Junior Championship in giant slalom in Madonna di Campiglio , Italy, by over 2 seconds . In the same year , when she was almost 18, she also won the overall European Cup as well as the downhill and giant slalom rankings. In 1981 she became Austrian champion in giant slalom and also started successfully in the World Cup . She achieved a total of four top 15 places in three disciplines (downhill, giant slalom and combined). Her best World Cup result was tenth place in the descent of the gold key race in Schruns on January 12, 1981. Erika Gfrerer was a member of the ÖSV squad between 1978 and 1982 . After several knee injuries and cartilage damage, she had to end her career in 1983.
On her travels she met her future husband Peter Whittaker, professional mountain guide and director of Whittaker Mountaineering, and moved to Washington , USA, at the foot of Mount Rainier . With her husband, she has climbed numerous peaks on all six continents, including nine climbs of Kilimanjaro . From 1990 to 1994 she also worked as a children's racing trainer in the USA. She lives and works with husband Peter and their two children in Ashford , Washington, USA.
