Eritrean Airlines is the national airline of Eritrea , based in Asmara and based at Asmara Airport .

history

Eritrean Airlines was founded in 1991 during Eritrea's transition to independence, but was mainly by name in the first few years. She initially took over the ground services at the country's airports and acted as a sales agent for other airlines flying to Eritrea. Between 1998 and 2001 it flew as Red Sea Air .

In May 2002 it was decided to start operational flight operations. For this purpose, a leased Boeing 767-300ER was flown in in April 2003 . The next thing to do was to add a brand new Boeing 757-200 to the fleet , but instead a Boeing 767-200ER, which was also leased, was taken over in June 2004 . With destinations in East Africa, Europe and the Middle East, the airline reached its largest route network at that time. Further expansion plans were no longer implemented, the official website was no longer updated.

The Boeing 767-300ER left the fleet again in mid-2006 and was replaced in December of the same year by an Airbus A320-200 , which was operated in wet lease by the Turkish company AtlasGlobal (then Atlasjet). In March 2007 this was again replaced by a Boeing 757-200 from the same operator and finally in December 2007 by a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 .

The flight destinations have since been gradually reduced, the last flight to Frankfurt am Main being canceled in summer 2009. Since then, only a few charter flights have been carried out. However, on July 16, 2011, regular operations were resumed after extensive restructuring.

The airline is currently on the list of operating bans for the airspace of the European Union . It is therefore prohibited to fly into the European Union with its own aircraft.

Destinations

As of 2012, Eritrean Airlines flew from Asmara to Lahore , Dubai , Jeddah , Cairo and Khartoum . A connection to Frankfurt was started in April 2012 , but was given up again a short time later. Further flights should also be added successively.
