Church of the Redeemer Mengersgereuth

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Mengersgereuth , a district of the Frankenblick community in the Sonneberg district ( Thuringia ), was consecrated on November 11, 1729. It stands, characterizing the townscape, on the eastern slope of the Strohberg.

history

In 1726 the villages of Mengersgereuth , Hammern , Forschengereuth and Fichtach separated from the parish of Effelder and united in the new parish of Mengersgereuth. As a result, the church house, which is now a listed building, was built in 1726 and 1727 under the direction of master mason Johann Jacob Ehrhardt. In 1840 the church was renovated and galleries were added as part of a renovation . In 1906/1907 there was another redesign. Among other things, the chancel was expanded by an apse by the master bricklayer Fritz Luthardt and new pews were installed by the carpenter Brückner. Around 1960 the community had the entrances roofed over and the interior redesigned.

layout

The hall church stands on a high basement made of sandstone blocks. Its plastered facade is structured by corner pilasters and arched windows with sandstone surrounds . The apse consists of sandstone blocks. The nave has a half-hipped roof and on the east side a roof tower with a Welscher hood , lantern and weather vane. The interior with three-sided, two-storey galleries is spanned by a coffered beamed ceiling, which is painted and decorated with sky windows made of etched glass . A triumphal arch clad with glass tiles separates the chancel in the apse from the nave. The three apse windows have glass paintings by the Naumburg Institute for Glass Painting and Artistic Glazing Wilhelm Franke, 1906/1907. The pulpit with its profiled column and a polygonal pulpit with coffered parapet dates from 1727.

The organ builder Johann Greuling installed the first organ acquired in Behrungen in 1731. Using this instrument, the Römhilder Johann Heinrich Schmidt and Michael Schmidt from Schmiedefeld built a new organ in 1838 , which was rebuilt in 1868 by Ferdinand Möller from Schmiedefeld and in 1906/1907 by Christian Müller from Hildburghausen. In 1996 the organ builder Eule from Bautzen carried out a restoration of the baroque organ according to plans by Johann Heinrich Schmidt.

Three steel bells, cast in 1870 by the Bochum Association for Mining and Cast Steel Manufacture, hang in the church tower.
