Ernest McCulloch
Ernest Armstrong McCulloch (born April 27, 1926 in Toronto , † January 19, 2011 in Washington, DC ) was a Canadian hematologist and professor at the University of Toronto .
McCulloch is considered one of the pioneers in stem cell research . He and James Till jointly identified the stem cell and thus laid the foundations for stem cell research and research into hematopoiesis .
Life
McCulloch graduated from the University of Toronto with a medical degree in 1948 with an MD . He then spent a year of research at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine in London. McCulloch gained his first clinical experience between 1949 and 1952 at Toronto General Hospital , then he worked at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. In 1954 McCulloch moved to the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto as a clinical teacher . In 1958 he became head of the hematology subdivision at the Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto. In the Department of Medical Biophysics , he initially took on a junior professorship ( Assistant Professor 1959, Associate Professor 1964), and in 1966 a full professorship. In 1970 he became a professor in internal medicine. In 1982 he retired.
McCulloch worked until recently in research at the Ontario Cancer Institute and dealt with the growth of malignant blastic tumor cells in acute myeloid leukemia .

The Stem Cell Network , an association of Canadian stem cell researchers, has been presenting the Till and McCulloch Award for outstanding research in the field of stem cell research since 2005 .
