Ernest Kombo SJ (born March 27, 1941 in Pointe-Noire , Republic of the Congo , † October 22, 2008 in Paris , France ) was Roman Catholic bishop of the diocese of Owando . He was instrumental in the introduction of democracy in the Republic of the Congo.

Life

Ernest Kombo came from a family with six children. After primary school in Bandzadouga, he attended the small seminar in Mbamou and the large seminar in Kissoundi. He then joined the religious order of the Society of Jesus in Aix-en-Provence, France ; he was the first Congolese Jesuit. On July 8, 1973, he was ordained a priest for the Society of Jesus.

In 1983 he was appointed the first bishop of the Nkayi diocese by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained bishop on January 6, 1984 by Pope John Paul II himself; Co-consecrators were Eduardo Cardinal Martínez Somalo and Duraisamy Simon Cardinal Lourdusamy . In 1986 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Pointe-Noire; In 1990 he was appointed Bishop of Owando.

Ernest Kombo had lived in Paris for health reasons since 2007 and died of stomach cancer in the Val-de-Grâce hospital in Paris.

Act

With the renunciation of socialism in 1991 the "Republic of the Congo" was proclaimed. Ernest Kombo was the leader of the democratization process in the Congo to abolish the single party PCT and the development of the multiparty system as well as chairman of the transitional parliament of the national conference in 1990 and president of the Congo Supreme Council "Conseil Supérieur de la république (CSR)" from February 1991 to August 1992 until the first democratic elections.

He was president of the Bishops' Conference of the Congo from 2003 to 2006. Bishop Kombo was best known for his commitment to fighting corruption, poor governance and the unsatisfactory use of oil revenues. To support the population, he called the “Terram Pacis” foundation, which, with the support of the Bishops 'Conference of the Congo and the Association of Bishops' Conferences of the Central Africa Region (ACERAC), observed political and social life as an observatory and acted as the initiator of developments.
