The Ernst-Abbe-Platz is a square in Jena and is located on the site of the former main plant of the company Carl Zeiss . It was named after the German physicist, statistician, optician, industrialist and social reformer Ernst Abbe .
The square marks a new beginning in urban development after the decline of the industrial sector as a result of the political change in the territory of the GDR . As a result of the development of the Friedrich Schiller University into a city university, today it is mainly university buildings that frame the largely traffic-free area . As the Ernst-Abbe-Platz campus , it combines the Abbe lecture hall (Audimax) and a student union cafeteria in a small space alongside retail outlets . The Jenoptik AG corporate headquarters are also located at Ernst-Abbe-Platz, but have the postal address Carl-Zeiss-Straße 1 .
Many of the buildings on the square are listed, including Building 15 , Building 36 and Building 59 . The Jena tram goes to the Ernst-Abbe-Platz stop during the day with line 5. There is an entrance to the Goethe Galerie shopping center next to the bus stop .
In 1995 the object artist Frank Stella installed various metal sculptures on the square at the suggestion of Lothar Späth .
The Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena , the Ernst-Abbe-Monument , the Abbeanum , the Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium Jena and the municipal Ernst-Abbe-Bücherei are all not located on Ernst-Abbe-Platz.
