Ernst-Jörg von Studnitz (born June 5, 1937 in Berlin-Steglitz ) is a German lawyer and diplomat a. D.

Ernst-Jörg von Studnitz comes from an old West Moravian noble family von Studnitz . After graduating from high school, he studied law at the universities of Heidelberg , Berlin and Kiel from 1956 to 1960 , interrupted by an academic year (1962/1963) when he studied international law in Bloomington in the United States. In 1957 he became a member of the Corps Vandalo-Guestphalia Heidelberg. He passed his two legal exams in 1965 and received his doctorate in 1967. jur.

Studnitz joined the senior foreign service in 1967 . From 1969 to 1973 he worked at the German Embassy in Moscow and from 1973 to 1976 at the German Embassy in Ankara . For the next four years he was employed again at the Foreign Office in Bonn . This was followed by three years at the Permanent Representation of Germany to the United Nations in New York . After his return from the USA, Ernst-Jörg von Studnitz was again deployed in the Bonn Foreign Office from 1983 to 1986, followed by political tasks in East Berlin (1986–1990) and then again at the Foreign Office in Bonn in the political department for funds - and Eastern Europe.

From 1995 to 2002 he was ambassador to Moscow. As such, he was “one of the diplomats who very early criticized the visa facilitation that the Foreign Office had introduced in March 2000 with the so-called Volmer Decree - and he criticized so much that Moscow as a 'hoard of resistance 'against the new visa policy ”.

Since 2002 Ernst-Jörg von Studnitz has been a board member of the German-Russian Forum e. V. , its chairman from 2003 to March 2014 and honorary chairman since then. He was also a member of the steering committee of the German-Russian Petersburg Dialogue .

In 2005 he was awarded the Aleksandr Men Prize for his services to the intercultural mediation between Russia and Western Europe . Ernst-Jörg von Studnitz was awarded the Order of Friendship of the Russian Federation for his commitment to improving German-Russian relations . This was presented to him by Mikhail Fedotov on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the German-Russian Forum on October 19, 2011 . In 1998 he received the Great Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
