Berthold Hans-Friedrich von Ploetz (born July 12, 1940 in Nimptsch , Province of Silesia ) is a German lawyer and diplomat . He was State Secretary in the Federal Foreign Office and Ambassador to Brussels ( NATO ), London and Moscow .

family

Hans-Friedrich von Ploetz comes from an old Neumark aristocratic family who first appeared on Gut Wartenberg in Neumark in 1306 and has been recorded in Pomerania since 1509 , and is the son of the former landowner and later insurance employee Berthold von Ploetz (1903-1998), from 1907 named "von Ploetz called von Krause", and Bessie von Voigt (1905–1975).

Ploetz married on August 7, 1971 in Helsinki ( Finland ) Päivi Marianna Leinonen (born September 19, 1948 in Helsinki), the daughter of General Kaarlo Olavi Leinonen, commander of the Finnish armed forces , and Hilkka Virtanen. He is the father of two children.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1960, he studied law at the universities of Marburg , Berlin and Vienna . After the legal state examination, he was a research assistant at the University of Marburg and was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD .

In 1966 he joined the Foreign Service. First he worked in Morocco , then in Finland . In 1973 he returned to Bonn, where he works in the economic department and in the NATO department of the political department. Another station went to the USA and then back to Bonn in the 1980s, this time as deputy head and later head of department in the office of Federal Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher . In 1985 he became Head of Division 20, responsible for Western Europe, North America, NATO, WEU and European Unification. In 1988 he became deputy head of the German NATO embassy in Brussels.

From 1989 to 1993, Ploetz himself was the German NATO ambassador and permanent representative in the North Atlantic Council . Until 1994 he was head of the European department at the Foreign Office in Bonn and from 1994 to 1998 he was State Secretary in the Foreign Office as successor to Jürgen Trumpf , responsible for European integration as well as economic, cultural and legal issues. From 1999 to 2002 he was ambassador at the German Embassy in London and from 2002 to 2005 at the German Embassy in Moscow .

From 2006 to December 2010, Ploetz was the management spokesman of the German-Russian Youth Exchange Foundation .

From 1994 to 1999 he was a member of the supervisory board of the German Investment and Development Company and from 2008 to 2012 of Robert Bosch GmbH . Since 2011 he has been Chairman of the Investment Advisory Council of the Green Gateway Fund.
