Otto von der Gablentz
Otto Martin von der Gablentz (born October 9, 1930 in Berlin ; † July 13, 2007 in Amsterdam ) was a German diplomat who was ambassador to the Netherlands between 1983 and 1990 , ambassador to Israel from 1990 to 1993 and between 1993 and 1995 Ambassador to the Russian Federation .
Life
Otto von der Gablentz, son of Otto Heinrich von der Gablentz and his wife Hilde, née Zietlow, began to study law at the Free University of Berlin and at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg , which he graduated in 1952. In 1953 he completed a study course in sociology at the College of Europe in Bruges and following a post-graduate studies of political science at St Antony's College of Oxford University and at Harvard University , which he in 1955 with a Bachelor of Philosophy ended. He then began his professional career as a political scientist at the German Society for Foreign Policy (DGAP), where he dealt with the Berlin issue .
In 1959 von der Gablentz joined the Foreign Service and, after a position at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn , worked at the Embassy in Australia from 1961 to 1964 . He then served as Legation Counselor in the Foreign Office's Reunification Unit from 1964 to 1967 and in 1967 in the United Kingdom . In 1973 he became head of the division for European political unification and in 1978 he moved to the Federal Chancellery under Chancellor Helmut Schmidt , where he became head of the department for foreign and defense policy in 1981 .
After the change of government , von der Gablentz succeeded Gerhard Fischer as ambassador in the Netherlands in 1983 and remained there until he was replaced by Klaus-Jürgen Citron in 1990. He himself then took over the post of ambassador to Israel from Wilhelm Haas in 1990 , where he was Franz Bertele replaced. During this time he became an Honorary Fellow of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1993 . Most recently, he succeeded Klaus Blech as ambassador to the Russian Federation in 1993 and remained in this position until he retired in 1995, after which Ernst-Jörg von Studnitz became his successor there. 1997 awarded him the University of Amsterdam , the honorary doctorate . He was Rector of the College of Europe in Bruges from 1996 to 2001 and most recently lived in Amsterdam .
His marriage to Christa Gerke in February 1965 resulted in five daughters (Georgina, Alexandra, Jessica, Johanna and Julia).
Otto von der Gablentz died in Amsterdam in 2007 at the age of 76. He was buried in the Dahlem cemetery in Berlin.
