Franz Bertele

On October 2, 1990, the head of the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to the GDR, Franz Bertele, unscrewed the sign on his office building himself. The mission ended its work with the German reunification.

Franz Josef Bertele (born June 30, 1931 in Weikersheim ; † October 15, 2019 in Wachtberg - Pech ) was a German diplomat .

Life

Franz Bertele studied law in Würzburg and Heidelberg . After graduating, he joined the Foreign Service in 1960 and was deployed in Geneva , Montreal and Lagos , among others . From 1977 to 1980 he worked in the Federal Chancellery , from 1980 to 1988 in the Foreign Office as head of the legal department and the personnel department.

From February 2, 1989 to October 3, 1990, Bertele was the fourth and last head of the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to the GDR . After the reunification , the representation was dissolved. Thereafter, Bertele was the representative for the German-Soviet residence and withdrawal contract and German chairman of the mixed German-Soviet commission. From June 1992 to October 1993 he was head of the German embassy in Warsaw , from October 1993 to June 1996 he was the German ambassador to Israel . From 1996 to 2005 Franz Bertele was chairman of the Association for the Promotion of the Museum of Jewish History in Poland .

Bertele was a member of the CDU and had been a member of the Catholic student association K.St.V. Ripuaria Heidelberg in KV .
