history

The Ernst Moritz Arndt barracks in Neustadt (Hesse) were built parallel to the Hessen barracks and the Herrenwald barracks , both in Stadtallendorf , for the troops of the 6th Panzer Brigade of the 2nd Panzer Grenadier Division. On July 1, 1956, Combat Group A2 was set up as the predecessor of Panzer Brigade 6 from parts of Border Guard 4 in Hannoversch Münden and relocated to the Jäger barracks in Marburg on November 12, 1956 . On April 1, 1959, the name was changed to Panzerbrigade 6 and on June 21, 1960 the company moved to Neustadt (Hesse) to the newly built Ernst-Moritz-Arndt barracks. Panzerbrigade 6 was involved with Panzerbrigades 14 and 34 in the testing of Army Model 4 from July 1, 1976 to June 30, 1977. This resulted in the renaming to Panzerbrigade 14 on October 1, 1981 and subordination to the 5th Panzer Division . The brigade remained at its location in Neustadt (Hesse). With the order for the regrouping in Army Structure 5 on September 27, 1991, Panzer Brigade 6 became partially active. On August 14, 1992 she was given the nickname "Hessian Lion". From 2008 to 2013, the 3rd and 4th / Command Support Battalions 286 were stationed in the barracks .

BWI Informationstechnik GmbH Stadtallendorf was established at the site from August 1, 2009 until the barracks were closed .

In the 1980s, the Neustadt / Hessen driving school group existed in the Ernst Moritz Arndt barracks. The location telecommunications system 415/202 and the location ammunition defeat 471/1 were also assigned to the barracks .

The dental station (Terr) H 436 and the dentist group 417/3 between April 1, 1981 and December 31, 1998 were set up at the site for medical care between April 1, 1977 and March 31, 1981. From July 1, 1972 to September 30, 1998, the medical area 47/5 was equipped with material. If the departmental concept of the Federal Minister of Defense from 2001 provided for the maintenance of the property with 680 posts, the Neustadt (Hessen) location was put on the cross-off list with the 2004 deployment concept. The closure was carried out in two steps: In 2008 the technical area of the barracks was released. In 2013 the site was given up altogether.

Conversion and re-use

BW

The land use plan was changed in 2008 and 2009 for the subsequent use of the barracks and the development plan no. 25 “Vor der Dieck” was drawn up for the technical area of the former barracks with an area of 15.8 hectares, which provides for continuous commercial use of this area . In February 2010, 80 percent of the land abandoned by the Bundeswehr in the technical area had already been sold to a forwarding company. In addition, a further part of the site could be rented to a trading company. The state of Hesse supported the municipality's conversion management with funding. When the last soldiers from the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt barracks were bid farewell in June 2013, the mayor of the city expressed concerns about the speedy marketing of the remaining space. In a printed matter published by the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Transport and State Development, "Conversion in Hessen", it is pointed out that the suitability of the location is that in Neustadt (Hessen) the demand for living space is low and is directed towards building plots for single-family houses and semi-detached houses, not apartment buildings.

In December 2014 it became known that due to the wave of refugees, the barracks' accommodation buildings will be used by the State of Hesse as another branch of the Hessian initial reception facility for refugees from January 2015 . The accommodation of 800 refugees was planned here. The worsening situation in the course of 2015 finally forced the capacity to be increased to 1,100 people in September 2015. While the state of Hesse announced the closure of several initial reception facilities in March 2017 due to the lower number of refugees, the accommodations in the Ernst Moritz Arndt barracks in Neustadt (Hesse) were not included.
