Ernst Arthur Voretzsch (born August 13, 1868 in Lucka ; † May 18, 1965 in Colmberg ) was a German diplomat .

Life

Voretzsch studied law at the University of Göttingen . In 1889 he became active in the Corps Saxonia Göttingen . In 1899 he joined the Foreign Service . He became Vice Consul in Calcutta , Kristiania (Oslo) and Johannesburg . He was consul in Hong Kong , Singapore , Bangkok , Shanghai , Hankow and Kristiania. In 1919 he became a commercial attaché, secret legation councilor and chargé d' affaires in Oslo . In 1920 he moved to Lisbon as envoy . In 1928 he was appointed German ambassador to Tokyo . He retired in 1933 and moved back to Colmberg Castle in Middle Franconia, which he had acquired in 1927 .

Voretzsch was a collector of East Asian art and founded a Museum for Asian Art in Bamberg in 1937 , which he directed until 1959, the estate is now in the Museum for Applied Art in Frankfurt am Main .

In 1945 he became chairman of the Chamber of Arbitration for the Ansbach district . He was one of the founders of the CSU . In 1958 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Erlangen .

Ernst Adalbert Voretzsch was a nephew.
