Christian Ernst Brockelmann (born March 22, 1799 in Ratzeburg , † December 24, 1878 in Rostock ) was a German businessman and politician.

Life

Ernst Brockelmann was born the younger son of the tanner (and miller?) Johann Ernst Brockelmann (1765–1826) in his marriage to Caroline Dorothe Catharina, nee. Engeland (1767-1825).

After training as a businessman, Brockelmann took the oath of citizenship in Rostock in 1827, became a member of the merchant's company and was one of Rostock's outstanding entrepreneurs around the middle of the 19th century. He founded and operated four factories in Rostock and an iron foundry and machine factory in Güstrow , which was later continued by his son-in-law Theodor Schwarz (1819–1882). In addition, he was the leading shipowner in Rostock around 1856 , who operated with his own ships and as a correspondent ship owner . One of his best known business partners was the captain Stephan Jantzen . Brockelmann also took part in seal fishing in the Arctic Ocean with his ships . After his death, his company was liquidated.

In terms of local politics, he was a member of Rostock's citizenship from 1839 to 1857. 1848/1849 he was a member of the Mecklenburg Assembly of Representatives in the constituency of Mecklenburg-Schwerin 63: Willershagen . With his schooner Anna, as one of several escape helpers, he helped the democrats Gottfried Kinkel and Carl Schurz to flee to England after their spectacular escape from the Spandau Citadel in 1850 .

Ernst Brockelmann was with the Rostock merchant's daughter Christine, nee Erichsohn (* 1808) married. A son and a daughter are known. The orientalist Carl Brockelmann was a nephew.

The steamship Ernst Brockelmann of the shipping company Ahrens, built in 1927 at the Neptun shipyard , was named after Brockelmann .
