Ernst Finkemeyer

Ernst Finkemeyer (born March 23, 1935 in Osnabrück ; † August 7, 1981 in Sölden ) was a German lawyer and politician ( SPD ). From 1974 to 1981 he was senior city director of the city of Essen .

Life

The son of a master precision mechanic attended elementary school and grammar school in Osnabrück , where he also graduated from high school. From 1955 he studied law and passed his first state examination in 1959 and his second state examination in 1965 . From 1966 he worked as a legal advisor at the city of Essen and in the same year received his doctorate with a legal history thesis entitled Constitution, Administration and Justice of the County of Bentheim at the time of the Hanoverian pledge 1753-1804.

Between 1967 and 1971 Finkemeyer was head of the Essen city treasury and, as a result, personal advisor to the city director Karl-Heinz Rewoldt. On February 27, 1974, he was unanimously elected as his successor to what was then the youngest City Director of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was inaugurated on May 2, 1974. Previously, in 1972, he was appointed as an alderman for the Department for Urban Development.

In his capacity as City Director, he was on the boards of the Emschergenossenschaft , Gelsenwasser AG , the Rheinischer Sparkassen- und Giroverband , the Ruhrtalsperrenverein , the Ruhrverband , the Sparkasse Essen and the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr as well as other committees and companies.

Ernst Finkemeyer died in 1981 as a result of an accident during a mountain tour in the Ötztal Alps near Sölden . He was buried in the south cemetery in Essen- Rüttenscheid .

Honors

The fire boat of the Essen fire brigade was named after him. It is stationed at fire and rescue station  3 in Essen city harbor .
