Ernst Johann Schaller (also (Ernst) Johannes Schaller ; * 1841 in Wasungen ; † June 25, 1887 in Coburg ) was a German animal and history painter and university lecturer .

Life

Schaller was the son of an official. He received his first training in Meiningen . He moved to Weimar for artistic training . There he was taught in particular by Friedrich Preller . His talent for landscape and animal painting was evident through his work on trips to the surroundings of Weimar as well as to Bavaria and Tyrol . During this early period he stayed longer in Munich before finally returning to Weimar. There he came into closer contact with Bonaventura Genelli , who inspired him for monumental art.

Schaller went to Berlin in 1867 . A good order book awaited him there due to the strong public and private construction activity. He was also employed as a teacher both at the teaching institute of the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin and at the Technical University . Schaller fell ill with a serious stomach problem at an early age. He then frequently changed health resorts , but could not be cured. In the end, his life was strongly influenced by the consumption of morphine , which had a negative effect on his creativity.
