The Wyschtscha Liha 1996/97 ( Ukrainian Вища ліга ) was the 6th edition of the highest Ukrainian league in men's football . The season began on July 20, 1996 and ended on June 23, 1997.

The league was reduced to sixteen clubs for the 1996/97 season. They played against each other twice on a total of 30 match days, divided into a first half and a second half. Defending champions Dynamo Kiev won the championship for the fifth time. The teams in the last two places were relegated to the Perscha Liha .
