Ernst Kaltofen

Ernst Dagobert Kaltofen (born December 23, 1841 in Langenau , † September 27, 1922 in Dresden ) was a German wood carver and sculptor .

Life

As a child in a poor extended family, Kaltofen had to work as a mountain boy in a mine at the age of 13 to earn a living . During this time he developed his talent for drawing and carving, which contributed to his decision to become a sculptor around 1870. The focus of his work was on figures and wooden reliefs depicting the life of miners from the Ore Mountains. One of his main works is the girder of the pulpit in the Church of Our Lady in Neustädtel .

Honors

In Brand-Erbisdorf a street was named after him.
