Live and act

Kunze spent his childhood in his birthplace Witzschdorf near Zschopau in the Ore Mountains. Already at this time he began to carve . After the Second World War, the trained electrician took the opportunity to study pedagogy for the lower grades at the University of Leipzig after preparation in a workers 'and farmers' faculty .

After completing his studies, his path initially led him as a teacher at the elementary school in Augustusburg, through the post of director of the general school in Niederwiesa, to the academic assistant in the pedagogical district cabinet in Karl-Marx-Stadt , among other things for art education. From 1974 to 1990 he was head of the art education department at the pedagogical college for kindergarten teachers in Karl-Marx-Stadt.

In 1953, Kunze completed a training course for carving teachers at the House for Ore Mountain Folk Art in Schneeberg , led by Reinhold Langner from Dresden. He then completed a distance learning course as well as the external upper level examination in art education at the University of Leipzig. He later investigated carving and wood design in the Ore Mountains. He was looked after by the folklorist Manfred Bachmann .

In 1976 he successfully defended his dissertation at the Institute for Art History at the University of Leipzig on the topic: "On the systematic development of skills in plastic design in popular artistic creation, area of carving / wood design".

Kunze worked, among other things, in the district commission for art education, participated in annual holiday courses in the district, gave lectures and wrote methodical instructions for carving communities. In the early 1960s, Kunze also developed curricula for the “special school” (subject area carving / wood design) - the first course took place in 1963 in Annaberg. He also wrote a carving primer for children and young people in 1971. Kunze was involved in founding the Volkskunstschule Oederan in 1967 and was instrumental in shaping the curriculum there.

Before 1990 he also worked on a voluntary basis in numerous committees, including the central working group Volksschaffen, the editorial advisory board for "Bildnerisches Volksschaffen" and the scientific advisory board of the Folklore Center Erzgebirge / Vogtland. For his long-time residence in Niederwiesa , he developed the design for a town pyramid and created the figures for it in 1961.
