Ernst Katzer

Traugott Ernst Katzer (born May 19, 1839 in Lauenstein ; † October 20, 1921 in Oberlößnitz ) was a German pastor , Saxon church councilor and publicist .

Katzer was one of four children of the court director in Lauenstein, Johann Traugott Katzer (1801 / 02-1849), who was a member of the 2nd Chamber of the Extraordinary State Parliament in 1848 .

He attended grammar school in Bautzen from 1854 to 1859 , then he studied theology in Leipzig until 1863 , where he was particularly influenced by the logician and philosopher Drobisch . There he also became a member of the Lausitzer Preacher Society .

He began his professional career as a teacher at the Marquardt private institute in Dresden, then moved to Pirna in 1865 as a hospital preacher , which was linked to the position of castle preacher in Zehista . In 1869 he became a deacon at the Pirnaer Marienkirche and in 1874 archdeacon and pastor in the sanatorium Sonnenstein . In 1877 he received his doctorate in Leipzig.

From 1886 to 1909 Katzer was Primarius of the Nikolaikirche in Löbau . During this time he and others founded the Upper Lusatian Branch Association of the Evangelical Federation in 1887 , the first branch association within Saxony. Between 1889 and 1921 he was a member of the board of the Saxon state association, from 1914 as an honorary member, and from 1890 to 1909 he was the chairman of the Löbauer local group. In 1887 he also took over the management of the Löbauer branch of the Gustav Adolf Foundation , which he held until 1909.

From 1894 Katzer was a member of the authors' tribe of the New Saxon Church Gazette . With The Evangelical-Lutheran Church System of the Saxon Upper Lusatia , in 1896, he succeeded in creating the first overall representation of the ecclesiastical constitutional structure in Upper Lusatia.

From 1901 until his retirement in 1909 he was a member of the Saxon regional synod . In 1908 the University of Leipzig honored him with the appointment of Dr. theol. hc; In 1909 he was appointed to the church council , then Katzer retired in Oberlößnitz .

He then devoted himself to journalism “the tension between church and school until he found a new topic in the intellectual historical interpretation of the First World War.” From 1913 to 1920 he also worked for the magazine Deutsch-Evangelisch .
