Ernst Kossak (1814–1880)

Ernst Ludwig Kossak (born August 4, 1814 in Marienwerder , West Prussia , † January 3, 1880 in Berlin ) was a German journalist and writer. He is considered the "father" or "creator" of the Berlin feuilleton in the 19th century.

Life

Kossak graduated from high school in Gdansk , studied philology, history and music in Berlin from 1834 to 1837, trained as a pianist and dealt extensively with basso continuo and composition. After his studies he worked as a piano teacher in Berlin and worked as a music critic for numerous newspapers and magazines. In 1846 he took over the music criticism for the newly founded liberal Berliner Zeitungs-Halle , in 1848 the features section of the Berliner Constitutionellen Zeitung . Kossak edited the Berliner Musik-Zeitung Echo in 1852/53 and founded the Berliner Feuerspritze in 1853 . Blotting paper for burning questions (until 1854) and the Berlin Monday Post in 1855 . Newspaper for politics, society, literature and art , which he published until 1864. He also worked as a Berlin correspondent and columnist for numerous foreign daily newspapers, especially for the Schlesische Zeitung in Breslau.

Between 1853 and 1856, the respected critic and columnist also issued with Adolf Anderssen the Schachzeitung the Berlin Schachgesellschaft out. He also composed some chess problems .

In 1857, Kossak's first stroke caused an eye disease. Ten years later he suffered another stroke, which led to severe physical paralysis and made him largely unable to work. Since 1870, Kossak had to rely on the support of the German Schiller Foundation. Only death released him from more than ten years of illness.

Kossak was buried in the Matthäikirchhof in Berlin in January 1880 . His grave, which was adorned with a black marble column, has now been leveled and can no longer be found.
