Life

Ernst Ludwig Orlich (actually: von Orlich) came from a noble Prussian family from which several Lutheran theologians emerged . His father was the pensioner Johann Martin Orlich. He himself had completed a theology degree at the University of Halle in 1724, was a private tutor in Cottbus in 1727 , from November 1730 pastor in Kolkwitz near Cottbus, 1737 pastor in Trebnitz near Magdeburg , 1746 pastor in Magdeburg and 1748 chief pastor in Braunschweig at St. Martin's Church . From 1761 on, Orlich was the chief pastor of St. Michaelis; Georg Philipp Telemann had composed a cantata ( TWV 3:75) for his inauguration .

During Orlich's term of office, the St. Michaelis Church, which was rebuilt after a fire, was inaugurated on October 19, 1762. On this occasion, Orlich gave the solemn sermon The Dutiful Behavior of Christian Congregations in the Intention of Their Churches , which was also published. Orlich held the post of chief pastor until his death in 1764. He died of a heart attack during a well treatment, where he was staying in Bad Pyrmont.

He married Juliane Charlotte von Schmieden in May 1731. Since she died after four weeks of marriage, he went into his second marriage on April 27, 1735 with Henriette Louise Hein from Walkenhagen.
