Ernst Moriz Kronfeld
Ernst (F.) Moriz Kronfeld , also Mauriz , (born June 3, 1865 in Lemberg , † March 16, 1942 in Vienna ) was a Galician , Austro-Hungarian botanist and journalist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Kronf. ".
Life
Ernst Moriz Kronfeld was the brother of the two physicians Adolf Kronfeld (1861–1938) and Robert (1874–1946, dentist); the sons of the latter were the glider pilot Robert Kronfeld (1904-1948) and the dentist and university professor Rudolf Kronfeld (1901-1940).
He studied natural science at the University of Vienna from 1882 to 1887 (1886 Dr. phil.). He then worked as a freelance writer and later as a culture editor for Viennese newspapers (including Fremdblatt, Die Zeit, Tagblatt), for which he wrote reports on theater and cultural events; he also wrote popular science papers. He was a shop steward at the “ Kosmos ” society for nature lovers in Vienna .
As a board member of the Vienna journalists and writers' association “Concordia”, Kronfeld promoted the horticultural society, of which he was a corresponding member since 1909, and the higher gardening school in Vienna as a lecturer on the history of gardens and garden art.
Of his botanical work, the treatises “ On the biological conditions of the aconite blossom ” and the biography of Anton Kerner von Marilaun received special recognition.
Among other things, Kronfeld owned a large collection of "books, pictures, documents and plans relating to the history of the Schönbrunn Gardens". It is believed that this collection was confiscated from him in the course of his persecution as a Jew by the National Socialists.
Kronfeld was since 1896 with Rosalie Kronfeld, nee Lanzer, born on February 17, 1874 in Vienna, married. With her he had a son Curt (* 1897). The couple lived on March 13, 1938 in Vienna 2nd, Heinestrasse 33/17, which was renamed by the National Socialists in Schönererstrasse. His wife was deported to Theresienstadt on August 13, 1942 and murdered in Treblinka.
