Ernst Priesner (born May 12, 1934 in Vienna ; since July 19, 1994 missing near Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was an Austrian biologist . He conducted research in the field of sex pheromones at the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology in Seewiesen . His entomological focus was on the research of hymenoptera and butterflies .

Ernst Priesner attended high school in Klagenfurt . He studied biology at the University of Vienna , where he worked in the laboratory of William Kühnelt preparing his dissertation at the Zoological Institute and in 1959 a doctorate was.

After completing his studies, Priesner first worked at the Forest Zoological Institute of the University of Göttingen before moving to Dietrich Schneider's group at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in 1963 . Two years later he followed Schneider to Seewiesen to the Max Planck Institute there. In 1974 Ernst Priesner completed his habilitation at the University of Erlangen , where he specialized in the investigation of insect pheromones , especially of glass winged birds . In 1983 Priesner was awarded the Gay Lussac Humboldt Prize for his work in the field of pheromone research. He was the driving force behind the study of glass winged birds by attracting them with synthetic pheromones, which led to the discovery of many new species. For this purpose, Priesner developed a pheromone set of 21 pheromones that can be used to attract almost all types of glass winged birds.

Ernst Priesner has been missing since July 1994, when he did not return from inspecting attractant traps in the mountains near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the area of the Pflegeersee . Various searches by the mountain rescue team were unsuccessful.
