Ernst Schmid (* 1888 in Egnach ; † February 28, 1941 in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss geographer.

Live and act

Ernst Schmid grew up in simple circumstances. After attending the Thurgau teachers' college in Kreuzlingen , he taught in Tägerwilen . A job as a teacher of the orphanage in Zurich enabled him to study at the local university , which he in 1916 with a dissertation on the settlement and economic geography of the canton Thurgau completed that in the 1918 writings of the Society for the History of Lake Constance and its surroundings appeared. After the First World War , Schmid worked for the Red Cross in the field of prisoner exchange until the cantonal school in St. Gallen appointed him professor for geographic subjects in 1920.

Schmid belonged to the "Ostschweizerische Geographisch-Commercielle Gesellschaft" (today: "Ostschweizerische Geographische Gesellschaft"), which he chaired in 1929. From then on he edited the communications of the Ostschweizerische Geographisch-Commercielle Gesellschaft , for which he himself wrote some articles; the magazine was discontinued soon after his death.

From 1921 Schmid represented the canton of St. Gallen on the board of the " Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings ". In 1936 he was elected club president to succeed Victor Mezger . During his presidency there was an upswing in club life, which, however, broke off with the beginning of the Second World War . In an increasingly difficult environment, Schmid was keen to promote scientific and cultural exchange between Switzerland and Germany. In 1941, for example, he invited the Freiburg geographer Friedrich Metz to give a lecture in St. Gallen; Schmid died of a stroke while preparing for this event. His successor as president of the Bodensee-Geschichtsverein was the Thurgau Cantonal School Rector Ernst Leisi .
