Ernst Friedrich Gottlieb Senckel (born March 7, 1836 in Mertensdorf ; † October 29, 1912 in Hohenwalde ) was, in addition to his job as a Protestant pastor, also a poet , writer and manager of the Association for Youth Savings Banks in Germany , which was founded on November 2, 1880 . He went down in the history of the savings banks as the "father of school savings" .

biography

Ernst Senckel studied theology at the Universities of Halle , Tübingen and Berlin . From 1861 to 1864 he worked as a parish priest in the Rauhen Haus Wicherns in Horn . After ordination in 1864, he took up his first pastorate in Deutsch Lieskau , formerly the Doberlug-Sonnenwalde district. As a chaplain he was in the Main Army hospital from 1866 .

On July 23, 1867, he was appointed parish junior cum spe succedendi an official assistant of the pastor with the hope of succeeding the Protestant parishes of the Hohenwalde parish .

At his instigation, the Markendorfer Church was restored in 1868 and the Hohenwalder Church in 1869.

At the local school he opened a Sunday school , a Christian reading club and a public library . On November 1, 1867, he introduced school savings here by founding a school savings bank. According to Senckel's idea, the development of thrift and self-control should be encouraged in childhood. He saw the combination of school and savings as particularly favorable, since the school could already exert an educational influence. As a result of this conviction, the Association for Youth Savings Banks in Germany was founded .

Since founding his first school savings bank on April 1, 1867, he also began to write articles and books on saving. The first savings books were printed in 1877, and by 1887 23,000 were in circulation.

His services were recognized accordingly, in 1906 Emperor Wilhelm II. King of Prussia awarded him the Class IV Red Eagle Order for his services in Hohenwalde . In the village of Hohenwalde, the old Siedlerweg was renamed Ernst-Senckel-Weg .
