Ernst Steinitz (born March 25, 1881 in Beuthen / Upper Silesia , † February 1, 1942 in New York ) was a German doctor and art collector.

Life

family

Ernst Steinitz was the son of a businessman. In 1913 he married the painter and art critic Käte Steinitz , with whom he had three daughters.

Career

Ernst Steinitz studied medicine and then worked in Breslau , Dresden and Berlin . While still in the German Empire , he married Käthe Traumann before serving as an officer in the First World War. After the birth of his first daughter in 1915, he was transferred to Hanover in 1918 to take over the management of the military hospitals there as a medical officer. After his wife had followed him to Hanover, he settled as a specialist in Hanover on January 1, 1919 and opened a practice in Georgstrasse .

In 1922 Ernst Steinitz got a job as a senior doctor at the Jewish Hospital Siloah . Immediately after the seizure of power by the Nazis but was on March 31, 1933 Wilhelm Reich was on leave by the so-called "Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service ", finally released in May of the same year. In 1935 Steinitz emigrated - before his wife and daughters - via Holland and Israel to the USA , where he died in 1942 during the Second World War at the age of 60.
