Professional Activities
Career in business
From 1988 to 1991 he worked for TCR Europe Limited and Three Cities Research, Inc. , investment companies of the South American beverage company Bemberg Group (known primarily for the Quilmes brewery ), in London and New York.
In 1991 Freyberg founded “Quadriga Finanz” with Hambros Bank and Credit National. The company was based in Berlin, with a focus on advising on the privatization of East German companies by the Treuhandanstalt . In 1994 it changed its name to “Freyberg Hambros” and was increasingly involved in M&A transactions for medium-sized companies. In 1998 the British merchant bank Close Brothers took a 51 percent stake and "Freyberg Close Brothers" was created, private equity companies became an important customer group. At Close Brothers, Freyberg was CEO until December 2012. This was bought in 2009 by the Japanese investment bank Daiwa Securities SMBC and operates today under the name "Daiwa Corporate Advisory GmbH" and is one of the leading independent corporate finance consultancies for medium-sized companies. In addition, he is / was a member of various supervisory boards and advisory boards, including Malteser Deutschland gGmbH , Vermögensverwaltung Flossbach von Storch AG, the temporary employment company Manpower GmbH and the IT service provider Magirus AG.
Von Freyberg has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Blohm + Voss shipyard since 2012 . Von Freyberg's mother was one of the heiresses of the Blohm family.
Istituto per le Opere di Religione (IOR)
On February 15, 2013, Freyberg was still with the consent of Pope Benedict XVI. appointed by the Cardinals' Commission of the IOR as President of the Supervisory Board - on February 11, 2013 Pope Benedict XVI. announced his resignation. Freyberg succeeded interim president Ronaldo Schmitz . Because of his participation in the Blohm + Voss shipyard , which also produces military equipment, his appointment received critical comments.
Von Freyberg considers his two most important tasks to be to create transparency within the structures and procedures of the IOR as well as to clear up and, if necessary, end criminal processes such as money laundering and tax evasion, with which the financial institution has been repeatedly associated in the past.
In the summer of 2013, the Nunzio Scarano scandal rocked the Vatican. Not the IOR, but the public prosecutor's office exposed Scarano's activities. The prelate was accused, among other things, of hiring an ex-secret agent to smuggle 20 million euros in black money for a shipowner's family from Switzerland to Italy. In addition to Scarano, a former employee of the Italian secret service and a financial service provider were arrested. Because of the Scarano scandal, IOR general director Paolo Cipriani and his deputy Massimo Tulli had to resign. That was embarrassing for von Freyberg, who had previously spoken of a “good team” in an interview with Cipriani and Tulli.
Following the resignation of General Director Cipriani and his deputy Tulli, von Freyberg took over the post of General Director on July 1, 2013. On November 30, 2013, von Freyberg was replaced as General Director by the newly appointed Rolando Marranci.
In July 2014 Ernst von Freyberg resigned as President of the IOR. "In phase one we had to check all accounts to make sure that every customer with us should also be a customer. The second is to investigate the big cases of the past, which are always present as rumors. There we have Once the real facts have been established. Third: We have created transparency in particular by posting our annual financial statements on the Internet, just like any other financial institution in the world, "said Ernst von Freyberg in an interview with ARD.
According to the FASZ of July 6th, he had about 1,400 accounts closed; his successor as CEO will be the Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Douville de Franssu . The Vatican confirmed this on July 9, 2014.
