Georg Freiherr von Freyberg-Eisenberg zu Allmendingen (born March 10, 1926 in Nictheroy near Rio de Janeiro ; † February 21, 2017 in Haldenwang , Bavaria ) was a German farmer and politician ( CSU ).

Life

Georg Freiherr von Freyberg-Eisenberg was born in 1926 as the youngest of two sons of Conrad Freiherr von Freyberg-Eisenberg-Allmendingen (1877–1939) and Marta v. Sperling- Manstein (1884–1956) was born in Brazil . In 1930 his parents returned with him to the family headquarters in Allmendingen . Georg was a Roman Catholic and the father of five children. His youngest son Philipp Erwein bears the name Prinz von der Leyen and zu Hohengeroldseck and is head of the Princely House of Leyen , from which his mother was descended.

After attending the Allmendingen elementary school and grammar school in Ehingen / Württemberg, Freyberg had to do the Reich Labor Service . He was then sent to the German Western Front , where he was taken prisoner of war . After returning from the war, Freyberg studied agriculture and forestry in Stuttgart and Munich so that he could later run his parents' business. In Munich he joined the Catholic student union Rheno-Bavaria . Until 1961 Freyberg worked for the Bavarian Farmers' Association and was temporarily managing director for them in Dillingen and Wertingen . He was also a forestry and farmer in Haldenwang .

Freyberg married Marie Adelheid Princess von der Leyen and zu Hohengeroldseck (1932–2015) in Rome in the spring of 1957 and moved into the Unterknöring Castle, which has been family-owned since the 17th century. From the war experiences of the Second World War, he saw a personal obligation to work politically for a better future “after the godless Nazi era”. In 1958 Freyberg was elected to the local council of Unterknöringen near Burgau and later became a member of the district council for almost two decades . In 1963 he took over Haldenwang Castle and became a member of the council of the municipality of the same name. At the same time he took on other tasks as a delegate of the administrative community. From 1970 to 1982 Freyberg was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament for the constituency of Swabia and a member of various committees.

He later became chairman of the alumni association of Bavarian state parliament members. Above all, Freyberg took on tasks as district chairman of Günzburg for the Bavarian farmers' association for three decades .

In 1982 Freyberg was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class . He was Knight of Honor and Knight of Devotion to the Sovereign Order of Malta.
