Erskine ( Gaelic : Arascain ) is a town in the Scottish council area of Renfrewshire . The name means "from the height of the cliff".

The village is located in the north of Renfrewshire about 15 km northwest of Glasgow and 19 km east of Greenock not far from the Clyde . The nearest town is Bishopton, two kilometers away . To the north-west is the listed manor house Mar Hall , which now houses a hotel.

history

In the 13th century Henry de Erskine ruled the lands of Erskine. Before they passed to the Blantyre family in 1703 , they were owned by John Hamilton of Orbiston . In the 19th century Erskine was a small town with 973 inhabitants in 1831. By 1881 it grew to 1653 inhabitants. During the First World War , Erskine House , the former seat of the last Lord Blantyre , was used as a hospital. By 1951 the population had dropped to 618. However, Erskine was included in the housing program and became one of the first planned settlements in Scotland after the end of World War II . Since then, Erskine has recorded steadily increasing population numbers from 15,537 in 2011.

Erskine is located at the south end of the Erskine Bridge , the only crossing of the Clyde west of Glasgow, which connects the A82 on the north bank via the short slip road M898 with the M8 directly south of Erskine. Furthermore, the A726 coming from Paisley runs directly north of the city. Even in the past, Erskine did not have its own train station. The closest is in neighboring Bishopton. It was established in the 19th century by the Caledonian Railway and served by the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway . Today the station is on the Inverclyde Line of First ScotRail . Glasgow International Airport is four kilometers to the southeast. Renfrew Airport , located south of Renfrew , was in operation until 1966 .
