Ertuğrul Apakan (* 1947 in Izmir - Bornova ) is a Turkish diplomat and former permanent representative of Turkey to the United Nations.

biography

After joining the diplomatic service in 1971, Apakan was promoted to ambassador to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in 1996 . He then became, as a recognized expert, Director General for Cypriot and Greek Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2000 . In this function he was also appointed Deputy Undersecretary in 2004.

Subsequently, in December 2006, he was appointed Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer . In this capacity, he signed an agreement on December 6, 2007 with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Turkey, Eckart Cuntz , on the establishment of a German-Turkish university in Istanbul . In addition, as Undersecretary of State, together with Foreign Minister Ali Babacan, at the beginning of June 2009 he took part in a meeting with the Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandjan in Istanbul, which came about through the mediation of Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey and the settlement of disputes and the normalization of relations between the two Countries should serve.

A few weeks later, after confirmation by the Turkish Council of Ministers on June 29, 2009, he was appointed Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations as the successor to Baki İlkin . Apakan's successor as Undersecretary of State was Ambassador Feridun Sinirlioğlu , the previous Deputy Undersecretary of State for Middle Eastern Affairs , who also played a key role in talks between Israel and Syria . On August 28, 2009 he was received for the first time by the Secretary General of the United Nations , Ban Ki-moon , as part of the presentation of the credentials.

In 2012, Apakan was replaced by Yaşar Halit Çevik .
