Erwin Sutz

Erwin Sutz (born September 24, 1906 in Zurich ; † November 8, 1987 in Herrliberg ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman .

Life

family

Erwin Sutz was the son of Jakob Rudolf, authorized signatory in a silk trading company, and his wife Rosine Wilhelmine (née Widmer).

In 1941 he married Dora Sylvia (née Vogt) and they had four children together.

education

Erwin Sutz matriculated to study theology at the University of Zurich and continued his studies at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster and in 1930/1931 at the Union Theological Seminary in New York .

Career

In 1932 he was ordained in Zurich and from 1933 to 1940 he was pastor in Wiesendangen , then pastor in Rapperswil until 1946 , from 1946 to 1953 he was pastor in Zurich-Neumünster and from 1954 to 1969 he was pastor in Hottingen .

In 1969 Erwin Sutz was the victim of blackmail due to his same-sex tendencies. His superiors urged him to resign for health reasons, so that he subsequently fell seriously ill and could no longer continue his office; As a result, the travesty artist Röbi Rapp , who heard Erwin Sutz's sermons in the Kreuzkirche in Zurich-Hottingen, resigned from the Evangelical Reformed regional church.

Friendship with Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Erwin Sutz maintained an intense friendship with Dietrich Bonhoeffer until his execution in 1945 as an opponent of National Socialism and he made a significant contribution to his fame in Switzerland. Together with their fellow French fellow, Jean Lasserre , they met in New York and became friends. Together they shared a passion for pianism and they recommended each other where people were welcome to make music. They spent Christmas 1930 together in Cuba and in the spring of 1931 they traveled together to Chicago and St. Louis . Dietrich Bonhoeffer also visited Erwin Sutz several times in Switzerland; After his return, Erwin Sutz introduced Dietrich Bonhoeffer personally to Karl Barth in July 1931 and Emil Brunner in August 1932 .

Spiritual work

Erwin Sutz was shaped by Karl Barth and Emil Brunner, but was more committed to Barth's theology and tried to mediate after the falling out between the two professors.

Writing

In 1945 he wrote The Social Message of the Church and was the editor of the Church Gazette for Reformed Switzerland , a widely read voice of dialectical theology in Switzerland.
