It happened on the border is a 13-part crime series that was broadcast on the regional program of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk from February 1960 . The producer was advertising in Südwestfunk GmbH.

Based on real events, the series tells in complete episodes of border smuggling between Germany and Switzerland around Lake Constance in the 1950s. In a supporting story, a reporter from Südwestfunk asks a customs officer about incidents, which he then tells. The smuggled goods are mainly luxury goods such as coffee, chocolate, alcohol or cigarettes. At the end of one episode, the officer reports what punishment the smugglers were given.

The location of the series was Lake Constance and the surrounding region. The Higher Customs Directorate in Freiburg granted access to their files for the scripts.
The series was produced as early as 1958. According to the crime thriller website, there should be uncertainties about the number of episodes. While Südwestfunk speaks of only eight episodes, the Kabel Eins series lexicon lists twelve episodes, as does IMDb . It is therefore to be assumed that the episode Hazardous Paths is identical to the episode Hazardous Smuggling Party across Lake Constance broadcast by the Westdeutscher Rundfunk regional program in December 1961 .
The episodes were broadcast irregularly, sometimes several months passed before the next episode was broadcast.
