The species Escherichia virus T5 ( scientifically Escherichia virus T5 , with the bacteriophage T5 virus ) is a member of the genus Teqintavirus (formerly called T5virus or T5likevirus ) within the family Demerecviridae , subfamily Markadamsvirinae . These viruses are no longer listed in the Siphoviridae family by ICTV since March 2020 . They specifically infect bacteria of the species Escherichia coli ( coli bacteria ) and are therefore classified (non- taxonomically ) as bacteriophages (bacterial viruses).

Structure and genome

The virions (virus particles) of this species have a head with an icosahedral capsid 90  nm in diameter and a 250 nm long flexible, non- contractile tail. The capsid contains the double-stranded DNA - the genome of the phage with a length of 121750  bp (base pairs).

Propagation cycle

At the beginning of the infection of a coli bacterium, the T5 virion binds with its receptor binding protein pb5 to the ferrichrome transporter FhuA (receptor) on the outer membrane of the host cell . The binding triggers structural changes in pb5 and ultimately leads to the release of the DNA from the phage capsid and injection into the bacterial cell.

The release of the newly formed virions occurs typically for the members of the genus Tequintavirus by lysis .
