history

The Eschweiler Bergwerksverein EBV, which was founded in 1834 and has numerous hard coal mines, wanted to expand its sphere of influence to include ore mining and in 1837 took over the Velau zinc smelter in Eschweiler- Velau , which was founded by the Stolberg entrepreneur Matthias Leonhard Schleicher. As a second zinc smelter, the EBV then built the much larger Birkengang zinc smelter in Eschweiler- Birkengang . As early as 1847, however, the EBV sold its young zinc-lead division due to financial problems. The buyer was a consortium , from which the "Eschweiler Gesellschaft" emerged in 1848. The administrative seat was the former Stolberger Kupferhof "Burg Blankenberg" near the municipality boundary to Eschweiler , which was owned by the Englerth family and where Carl Englerth died in 1814.

In 1848 the “Eschweiler Gesellschaft” took over the “ Binsfeldhammer lead works ” between Stolberg and Vicht , founded in 1846, and continued to expand in the following years: It took over the Breinigerberg ore mine near Breinig , and in 1873 the lead, silver and zinc mine “ Holzappel ”, the mine “White” in the Bensberg ore area is the lead, silver and Galmeig pits in Wiesloch , the Sachsenhausen mine near Wellmich and, at times, the Diepenlinchen ore mine . On March 25, 1853, the Cologne bank Sal. Oppenheim took over a mortgage- backed 5% bond in the amount of 600,000 thalers for the “Eschweiler Gesellschaft”, which was licensed in 1848 . In 1855 the share capital was reduced in a ratio of 2: 1 from 1.3 million to 650,000 thalers and increased again to 1.5 million thalers through the issue of 8,500 priority shares.

On June 1, 1864, the Herkenrath mine "Washington" was sold to the "Eschweiler Gesellschaft". In 1879, a production of 2,095 tons of diaphragm was achieved on it, in May 1892 it was shut down. Later it was owned by Stolberger Zink AG for mining and smelting operations in Aachen until 1963 .

In 1922, the two companies "Eschweiler Gesellschaft" and "Stolberger Gesellschaft" formed a joint venture, which in June 1926 led to a merger in which the "Eschweiler Gesellschaft" was completely taken over. Since then, its administrative seat " Burg Blankenberg " has only been used for residential purposes and was demolished in 1972. The streets “Am Blankenberg” and “Rhein-Nassau-Weg” are still a reminder today.
