Víctor Rodolfo Espárrago Videla (born October 6, 1944 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player (midfielder) and now an active coach.

Player career

Espárrago, who played in attacking midfield, started playing football at Danubio FC . From there he moved to Club Atlético Cerro , where he played in the team coached by Ondino Viera from 1961 to 1965 as a regular on the right wing position. On March 26, 1966 he made his debut in the game of his new employer Nacional Montevideo against La Luz . With the Bolsos , he increasingly showed all-rounder skills and was used variably depending on the position. Under coach Roberto Scarone , he was able to celebrate winning the Uruguayan championship title in his first year of membership. He was in the ranks of Nacionals until 1973, then went to Spain in July of that year for Sevilla FC (1973 to 1975) and Recreativo Huelva (1975 to 1979) and finally returned to the Bolsos in 1979 , where he followed up his active career in February 1982 winning a total of six Uruguayan championships (1966, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1980), two Copa Libertadores titles (1971 and 1980), winning the Copa Interamericana in 1972 and two victories in the World Cup (1972 and 1980). For Nacional he was used in a total of 431 games over the course of his career, scoring 62 goals.

National team

Between December 4, 1965 and June 23, 1974, he made 40 official senior internationals for the Uruguayan national team , even though he had 67 Celeste appearances (18 goals) in total, and scored one goal (to make it 1-0) against the Soviet Union in the quarter-finals of the 1970 World Cup in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City ). He took part in the soccer world championships in 1966 , 1970 and 1974 . At the 1970 World Cup, his team was defeated in the game for third place of the German national team with 0: 1 and was fourth.

Coaching

Coach was Espárrago, initially employed in the sporting leadership as Secretario Técnico , at Nacional Montevideo in 1983, when another championship was won and from 1985 to 1987. He then worked at FC Cádiz (1987–1988) and looked after FC Valencia from 1988 to 1991 in a total of 170 matches (90 wins / 46 draws / 34 defeats) including 114 games in the Primera División (53/36/25). Sevilla FC (1991/92 and January 28, 1996 to May 25, 1996), Albacete Balompié (1992–1994), Real Valladolid (1994/95) and Real Saragossa (late 1996 to the end of the season in May 1997) were the following stations. Also Deportivo Huelva is listed as a coach station .. He was also until May 2006 coach of FC Cádiz, he had been training in the 1987/88 season in the seasons 2004/05 and 2005/06 of August 2004 and in which he in 2010 again sat on the dugout.

Today he is, among other things, a radio commentator for Andalusian radio stations.
