Esperança Gicaso (born July 2, 1992 in Luanda , Angola ) is an Angolan teacher and para - athlete . The athlete, who was blind at the age of three, participated in the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , where she competed as a runner in classes T11 and F11 .

Gicaso works as a teacher in Luanda.

Career

Esperança Gicaso was born in 1992 in the Angolan capital Luanda , at the age of three she went blind. As an athlete she was discovered by a member of the Angolan Paralympic Committee at the Oscar Ribas School in Luanda, her coach was Jose Manuel . She was supported by the Agitos Foundation, a worldwide active foundation of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Gicaso competed at the 2011 African Games in Maputo and won the silver medal in the 100-meter run after the Nigerian Deborah Adwale . At the World Athletics Championships for the disabled in Lyon in 2013 , Esperança Gicaso won the bronze medal in the 200-meter run behind the Brazilians Terezinha Guilhermina and Jerusa Santos . In 2015 she won the bronze medal over 100 meters T11 at the 2015 African Games in Brazzaville behind the Nigerian Lovina Onyegbule and Ivorian Diasso FB

In 2016 Gicaso took part in the Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , where she was also selected as the flag bearer for Angola. She was part of a team of four athletes from Angola and, together with her companion Alaine Antonio Dias Baptista, competed in the athletics competitions in classes T11 and F11 as a runner over 100, 200 and 400 meters. She could not qualify for the finals, but achieved her personal bests on 100 meters with a time of 12.61 seconds and on 400 meters with 1: 04.17.

At the World Athletics Championships for the disabled in London in 2017 , she won the bronze medal in the T11 200-meter run behind the Chinese Zhou Guohua and Liu Cuiqing . In the 100-meter run she won the silver medal behind Zhou Guohua and in front of the Thai Kewalin Wannaruemon .
