Valentin Esprit Fléchier

Valentin Esprit Fléchier (born June 10, 1632 in Pernes-les-Fontaines , Département Vaucluse , † February 16, 1710 in Montpellier , Département Hérault ) was a well-known French bishop, pulpit speaker and writer.

Life

Fléchier, from the county of Venaissin , was a member of the Jesuit order for a time . He later worked as a lecturer in rhetoric in Narbonne and went to Paris in 1659. There he soon became one of the best pulpit speakers and was also seen in the Hôtel de Rambouillet , the literary salon of the Marquise of Rambouillet .

In 1673, the same year as Jean Racine , Fléchier was accepted into the Académie française as the successor to the writer Antoine Godeau (Fauteuil 10). King Louis XIV appointed Fléchier bishop of Lavaur in 1685 and he took over the bishopric of Nîmes for two years . There Fléchier founded a small scientific academy and directed it for several years.

Esprit Fléchier died on February 16, 1710 in Montpellier at the age of 77.
