Essel is a northeastern part of the district town of Recklinghausen . The district is very rural. In terms of population, it is the smallest part of the city with 418 inhabitants and the third smallest in the city with an area of 1754 m².

In a clockwise direction (starting to the north) the city of Oer-Erkenschwick and Datteln border to the north-east . To the south is the Suderwich district , to the southwest the Berghausen and Hillen districts . West of the Ostviertel district .
