Eugène Ritter

Eugène Ritter (born November 9, 1836 in Geneva , † July 3, 1928 in Les Eaux-Vives , today part of the municipality of Geneva), entitled to reside in Geneva, was a Swiss historian and theologian .

Life

Eugène Ritter, son of the mathematician and teacher Elie Ritter as well as Félicie born Rey, passed the classical Matura in 1854 and the mathematical and scientific Matura at the Geneva Academy in 1857 . Ritter was subsequently employed as a private tutor , then between 1861 and 1862 as an institute teacher in Saint-Imier .

After his return to Geneva, Ritter took up the post of Adjunct of the Consistory of the Reformed Church , at the same time he devoted himself to studying philology and language. In 1873 he received a teaching position for French language history at the Geneva Academy, where he was promoted to full professor the following year , and in 1907 he retired .

Eugène Ritter, who was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Lausanne in 1904 and married Emma, ​​the daughter of Marc-Jean Oltramare, in 1870, died in 1928 at the age of 91 in Les Eaux-Vives.

In addition to mainly theological articles on Geneva history, Ritter published numerous studies on the history of literature, which made him a name among specialists in western Switzerland. In addition, he was the author of several works on Jean-Jacques Rousseau .
