Eaux-Vives (also Les Eaux-Vives ) was a municipality in the canton of Geneva in Switzerland, which was incorporated into the city of Geneva in 1931 after a referendum in 1930.

history

The name Eaux-Vives ( French for translating bubbling waters ) comes from the numerous springs that spring up on the slope above the village.

The municipality, which lay on the southern bank of Lake Geneva directly in front of the city fortifications, was founded on June 13, 1798 by an ordinance of the new French administration that allocated the former land area of the city of Geneva to various municipalities. When Geneva became independent from France in 1814, the rural communities retained their function.

In 1842 the inauguration of the new Protestant church, a building by the Geneva architect Jacques-Louis Brocher, took place. Eaux-Vives railway station opened in 1888.

In 1904, the municipality located near the Schifflände determined its own municipal coat of arms with the image of a ship.

In 1913, the municipality acquired from private ownership an area that makes up what is now Geneva's large Parc des Eaux-Vives city park near the lake shore on the Quai des Eaux-Vives .

Today Eaux-Vives is one of the four administrative districts ( section ) of the City of Geneva . In addition, Eaux-Vives describes an area in the area of the former village of Eaux-Vives , for example between the city center near Rive , Lake Geneva, the Parc de la Grange and the route de Frontenex .
