Eugen Schmid (born March 22, 1932 in Tübingen ) is a German lawyer and was Lord Mayor of the university city of Tübingen from 1975 to 1999 .

Life

Schmid graduated from the University of Tübingen to study law . In 1961 he did his doctorate there on the subject of the obligation to be considerate of security transfers .

From 1973 to 2007 Schmid represented the free voters in the Tübingen district assembly . After his election in 1974, he took up the post of Lord Mayor of Tübingen on January 3, 1975. During his first term of office he tried to push through the large-scale construction project Nordtangente . The north bypass was supposed to be a four-lane expressway connecting the Westbahnhof with Mohlstrasse , running from the Schmiedtorkreuzung to Mohlstrasse via two tunnels under the area of the city pavilions, thereby relieving Wilhelmstrasse . The construction costs should amount to at least 70 million DM . After the local council had approved plans for the north bypass in March 1979, resistance arose under the motto “our Tübingen is not Chicago” and signatures for a referendum were collected. The referendum on July 8, 1979, with a turnout of 50.5%, resulted in a result of 82% against the northern bypass, which was criticized as oversized . For Eugen Schmid it was a big setback because he was deeply convinced that despite all resistance, the majority would ultimately vote in favor of the building. This result forced the city of Tübingen to reorient its transport policy.

In 1982 Schmid ran for re-election and was confirmed in office on October 3 with 66% of the votes. In the second re-election on October 21, 1990, he managed to get 84% of the vote. He did not run for the 1998 election. After his departure on January 2, 1999, Brigitte Russ-Scherer (SPD) was his successor. From March 1995 to December 1998 Schmid was chairman of the Baden-Württemberg City Council .

At the beginning of February 2017, Eugen Schmid presented his memoirs to the city of Tübingen with the title Reflecting . Mayor Boris Palmer and city archivist Udo Rauch received the manuscript . The almost 600-page manuscript describes his life from childhood in Tailfingen to the end of his time as a local politician. It can be viewed in the city archive.

Honors

Schmid is an honorary senator of the University of Tübingen . With his resignation from the office of Lord Mayor he received the honorary citizenship of Tübingen . On October 23, 2008 he was awarded the Silver Medal of Merit by the Baden-Württemberg Association of Cities.
