Eumundi is a small town in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland , Australia . It is located about 115 kilometers north of Brisbane and 9 kilometers north of Nambour on the Bruce Highway . In 2016, 984 people lived here.

history

The name of the village goes back to Ngumundi or Huomundy , a local Aboriginal warrior who adopted an escaped convict in 1831.

Cattle were raised in the Eumundi area in the 1850s. The first road through the area was built in 1867, when the gold rush of Gympie began. The village was settled in the 1880s and by 1900 there were shops, craftsmen and streets there. When the railway line from Yandina to Cooroy was completed in 1891 , the name of the place was given by the railway company with Eumundi. Due to the railway connection, the place developed into a regional center for the timber and dairy industry. The first sawmill was established in 1900 and was in operation until 1938. A town hall was built in 1908, a hotel and a Methodist church in 1911 and an Anglican church in 1912 . An art school was opened in 1912. The churches and the art school building are now under monument protection. In 1922 another sawmill came into the place. One processed hardwood, the other softwood. The timber industry cleared the area where pastures were created and the dairy industry continued to develop. In the 1920s, a butter factory was built in Eumundi and nearby Nambour .

In the 1960s, many dairy and banana growing farms became unprofitable. The properties were taken over by people who were looking for peace and quiet in the countryside, so new residents came to the area.

today

Eumundi has a railway station, a hotel and the Eumundi Historical Museum , which opened in 1996 in the building of the former Methodist Church . The listed butter factory burned down in 2005.

Every Saturday there is a market offering products from the region as well as handicrafts. There is also a morning market every Wednesday. The market attracts many visitors and tourists.

Eumundi is also home to a small brewery and winery.
