Eupithecia silenata is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe Spanner family (Geometridae). The scientific name of the species is derived from the caterpillar's forage plants, the ciliate herbs ( Latin silene ). features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 17 to 21 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings is predominantly gray to brownish. The outer edge area is darker brown and has a wavy white line through it. This is followed by a slightly lighter bandage, which has a crease near the front edge. The black center point is large, round and clear. The gray-brown hind wings are lightened towards the root field and show a small, elongated central spot.

egg

The egg is whitish and glossy. One side of the pole is stronger, the other less curved. On the surface of the bowl there are slightly recessed, indistinct dimples with very flat border strips.

Caterpillar

The caterpillars are whitish, greenish or yellow-brown. The back and side back lines are dark and sometimes interrupted.

Doll

The yellow-brown doll has a cone-shaped cremaster , which is equipped with two stronger and six weaker hook bristles.

Similar species

The larch moth ( Eupithecia laricata ) is usually less contrasting and has narrower wings. The light-colored band on the forewings is usually narrower.

As with many flowering species, a reliable determination should be made by specialists, and a genital morphological examination is also advisable.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

Eupithecia silenata occurs in mountainous areas of Central and Southern Europe, in the east to the Giant Mountains and in the Caucasus . In the Alps and the Pyrenees it can be found up to 2300 meters above sea level . The species is mainly found on mountain slopes and on mountain meadows.

Way of life

The moths are nocturnal and fly in one generation from May to June. They appear in both sexes in artificial light sources . The caterpillars live from July to September and feed on the flowers and fruits of the pigeon goiter ( Silene vulgaris ), and occasionally on their leaves. The pupae overwinter.

Danger

In Germany, Eupithecia silenata can only be found in a few regions and is listed in Category 2 (critically endangered) on the Red List of Endangered Species .
