Away goals rule

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The away goals rule is in some football - and also Handball - cup competitions , the one -and-away provision (. Such as the relegation matches to the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga of the DFB and the knockout rounds of the EHF Champions League ) , applied to a decision on the winner if possible without an extensionor force a replay. It means that in the event of a tie in the addition of the first and second leg, i.e. in the event of a tie in points and goals, the team that has scored more away goals will reach the next round. It was first used internationally in 1965, but will no longer be used in knockout matches in UEFA football competitions (e.g. UEFA Champions League , UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League ) from the 2021/22 season onwards.

application

The rule applies if both teams have the same number of goals after the first and second leg (special case see below ). The team that can then have more away goals wins.

 Beispiel 1 (2 Heimsiege)
 Mannschaft A 1:0 Mannschaft B (Stadion Mannschaft A)
 Mannschaft B 3:2 Mannschaft A (Stadion Mannschaft B)
 Sieger: Mannschaft A (Mannschaft A 3:3 Mannschaft B → Auswärtstorregel: Mannschaft A 2:0 Mannschaft B)
 Beispiel 2 (2 Auswärtssiege)
 Mannschaft A 0:1 Mannschaft B (Stadion Mannschaft A)
 Mannschaft B 2:3 Mannschaft A (Stadion Mannschaft B)
 Sieger: Mannschaft A (Mannschaft A 3:3 Mannschaft B → Auswärtstorregel: Mannschaft A 3:1 Mannschaft B)
 Beispiel 3 (2 Remis)
 Mannschaft A 1:1 Mannschaft B (Stadion Mannschaft A)
 Mannschaft B 2:2 Mannschaft A (Stadion Mannschaft B)
 Sieger: Mannschaft A (Mannschaft A 3:3 Mannschaft B → Auswärtsregel: Mannschaft A 2:1 Mannschaft B)

In all three examples, the score of both teams is 3: 3, but Team A was achieved in each case (more) away goals as Team B . Team A is thus the winner in all examples, although in example 3 none of the teams was able to win a game.

In principle, the number of away goals is only important if there is a tie between points and goals.

The (erroneous) view held in fan circles that away goals count twice leads to confusion and wrong conclusions. For example, if a team lost 2: 3 away, they would lead 4: 3 in the overall result (doubling the two away goals) and move into the next round with a 0: 0 at home. This is not correct, however, after a 3-2 defeat away from home, this team has to win their home game 1-0, 2-1 or more than one goal difference in order to advance to the next round. With a 3-2 home win after a 2-3 away defeat, the game would go into overtime.

The away goals rule after extra time

If both teams have scored the same number of goals and the same number of away goals after two games, the second leg goes into extra time. In most cases (almost all UEFA competitions such as the Champions League or Europa League up to the 2020/21 season) the away goals rule is also applied to the result after extra time.

 Beispiel
 Mannschaft A 2:0 Mannschaft B
 Mannschaft B 2:0 Mannschaft A
Das Spiel geht in die Verlängerung.
 nach Verlängerung Mannschaft B 3:1 Mannschaft A
 Sieger: Mannschaft A

If extra time was goalless (i.e. the number of goals and away goals is still the same), the decision will be made on penalties . The away goals rule never applies here.

This rule does not apply in European handball competitions. If both teams have scored the same number of away goals after the regular playing time of the second leg, i.e. both games have ended with the same result, there is a seven-meter throw without prior overtime.

Variation after extension

In some competitions, e.g. B. the CONCACAF Champions League , the away goals rule does not apply after extra time.

 Beispiel
 Mannschaft A 2:0 Mannschaft B
 Mannschaft B 2:0 Mannschaft A
Das Spiel geht in die Verlängerung.
 nach Verlängerung Mannschaft B 3:1 Mannschaft A
 Die Entscheidung fällt im Elfmeterschießen.

Special case in English football until 2018/19

An unusual variant was used in the English League Cup in the semi-finals (the only round with home and away legs) up to the 2018/19 season: Here, the away goals rule was only applied after extra time, but never after regular time. It could be that the score did not change after extra time, but that no penalty shoot-out was necessary.

 Beispiel
 Mannschaft A 2:0 Mannschaft B
 Mannschaft B 3:1 Mannschaft A
Das Spiel geht in die Verlängerung.
 nach Verlängerung Mannschaft B 3:1 Mannschaft A
 Sieger: Mannschaft A

Reasons for the introduction and discussion about the abolition

Difficult journeys by away teams and lack of norms e.g. In the past, for example, the size of the pitch meant that home teams enjoyed an immense advantage when playing in their own stadium. The purpose of the away goals rule was cited to compensate for this home advantage and to encourage the away team to play a more offensive style.

Over time, however, the importance of home advantage decreased, which was also reflected in the statistics. While around two thirds of the teams won their home games in the European Cup between 1965 and 1981, only a little less than half managed to do so in the period 1997 to 2013. The away goals rule would also encourage the home teams to be more defensive.

For this reason, the away goals rule has been criticized for some time. At the end of May 2021, the Club Competitions Commission of the European Football Union recommended that the rule be abolished.

Abolition in knockout rounds of UEFA competitions

On June 24, 2021, UEFA announced in a statement that the rule would be abolished from the 2021/22 season for all knockout matches in international club competitions hosted by UEFA. This means that the rule will no longer apply in the Champions League and the Europa League from the 2021/22 season; the newly introduced Europa Conference League also starts without the away goals rule in knockout games. Instead, if there is any tie after two games, the second leg should now go into two 15-minute extensions. If there is no more goal difference over two games, a penalty shoot-out will be played in which the winner will advance to the next round.

In the group stage, the away goals rule still applies, but would only apply if, after every six games, two teams were absolutely equal in terms of points, goal difference and goals scored across all games and then again with the same criteria in the games.
