Association of European Professional Football Leagues
The European Professional Football Leagues ( EPFL , Association of European professional leagues ) is a 1997 Association of European Union Premier Professional Football Leagues ( EUPPFL ) established association of professional European leagues associated with currently 28 and full members; Only the association that organizes the highest league in a country can be full members, but associations from lower leagues only can acquire associated membership. It has been based in Nyon , Switzerland , since 2004 .
The association was founded in 1997 on the initiative of the English Premier League and the Italian Lega Nazionale Professionisti with the aim of giving the clubs and leagues involved more influence on the football policy that affects them. In 2005 the EUPPFL was converted into the EPFL ; at that time 14 professional leagues were full members. In the following years, more and more associations were accepted, including in 2006 the English Football League for the first time a lower-class association as an associated member.
