Eustach I. Garnier

Eustach I. Garnier (also Granarius , Grenier , Agrain ; † shortly after June 15, 1123 ) was a crusader , Lord of Caesarea and Count of Sidon , as well as constable and Bailli of the Kingdom of Jerusalem .

He came from Thérouanne in what was then the county of Flanders .

He accompanied Count Hugo II of St. Pol on the First Crusade . After conquering Jerusalem , he stayed in the Holy Land and distinguished himself at the Third Battle of Ramla in 1105 . In 1109 he appeared as the envoy of King Baldwin I and took part in the conquest of Tripoli .

The city of Caesarea was conquered by the Crusaders in 1101. A little later Eustach was enfeoffed with the rule of Caesarea . When Baldwin I had conquered Sidon with the help of the crusade of King Sigurd of Norway , Eustach received the county of Sidon in 1110 .

A little later he married Emelotte (also Emoleta, Emolata, Ermeline, Emme, Emma ), the niece of the Patriarch of Jerusalem Arnulf von Chocques , and received Jericho as a dowry from Arnulf's church property . With her he had two sons, Gerhard Garnier (also known as Eustach I. Garnier ) and Walter I. Garnier .

He took part in the unsuccessful sieges of Shaizar and Tire .

When King Baldwin II was captured in 1123, Eustach was elected constable and Bailli of Jerusalem. As such, on May 29, 1123, he defeated a Fatimid invading army near Ibelin .

He died shortly after June 15, 1123 and was buried in Jerusalem . His sons Gerhard and Walter took over his rule. In the same year his wife married Hugo II von Le Puiset , who was only a little older than their sons.
